Taylor Swift’s new album The Life of a Showgirl just dropped, and it already feels like one of her most ambitious projects. Fame, love, regret, and reinvention all weave through this record. By the end, you can feel the fresh start. Here’s a track-by-track look at what stood out to me on first listen.

The Fate of Ophelia

What a cool and dramatic opener! Taylor leans into Shakespeare and sets the stage for the album. Great storytelling.

Elizabeth Taylor

This song feels so big and sincere. I don’t know how else to describe it.

Opalite

Minimal and airy. Perfect for a drive. Good song placement within the album. Felt like a pause between heavier moments.

Father Figure

She samples George Michael, and it’s a hit. I thought it was a creative way to talk about the power struggles in the music industry.

Eldest Daughter

Quiet and personal. Emotional.

Ruin the Friendship

About a damaged friendship…but I’m not sure how this fits into the album?

Actually Romantic

Again, I don’t fully get why certain songs are on the album. Like is this about a real person? She’s throwing some shade around, and I got confused.

Wi$h Li$t

Playful. Sweet. I love it.

Wood

Funky and sexy. Another one that I loved straight away.

Cancelled!

Feels like I’m listening to Reputation and I’m not complaining. I do feel like this one could have been stronger, lyrically.

Honey

Sassy and sweet. A softer moment before the finale.

The Life of a Showgirl (ft. Sabrina Carpenter)

I loved that they collaborated on this song together. Felt like a full circle moment for both of them.

LISTEN ON SPOTIFY

Overall, this album is a mix of highs and lows, but I suppose that’s what makes it so interesting. It’s not what I expected at all, because I was fully expecting to be transported to 2000s pop. Taylor opens the door to what it’s like to be forever in the spotlight. She illustrates how that spotlight affects so many of her interpersonal relationships…for the good and bad. There are definitely tracks that are more joyful than others, but together they capture the thrill and the weight of being a showgirl. She’s a genius. She’s amazing. She’s shining! Ugh, I just adore her.
